impres FAQs
Q: What is impres?
A: Impres is a patented energy system that showcases our design capabilities. The Intelligent Motorola Portable Radio Energy System (impres) combines a "smart" battery with a "smart" charger to provide a host of features to optimize battery life and user convenience.
Q: Who should be interested in impres technology?
A: Impres technology was originally developed for use by government agencies and fleet operators who required a "smart", immediate, reliable and secure communications system. Impres technology is applicable to many other types of portable products, so it could be of great value to many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Q: Is impres only for portable radios?
A: No, impres technology can be used to create a host of next generation products.
Q: How does impres work?
A: An impres system combines the use of a "smart" battery, a "smart" charger, and a protocol to allow communication between the battery, charger and other accessory devices via a single wire. Information about the battery is stored in memory in the battery. The charger uses the battery information to control battery maintenance automatically. Products can also be designed to use the battery information for features such as battery identification, fuel gauging, battery cycle count, etc.
A: impres was designed for compatibility with nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium-ion batteries.
Q: What is reconditioning in an impres system?
A: Batteries are reconditioned by discharging them completely and then recharging them at a rapid rate. Reconditioning can significantly extend battery life as well as serve as a mechanism to re-establish a battery's capacity and status. Impres technology uses an adaptive algorithm to automatically determine when reconditioning should be done.
